What You Must Remember When You’re Working On Changing Your Habitual Patterns better life habitual patterns

❤ Hey there Better Lifers!

Life is full of challenging times.

That, in and of itself, is out of our control.
It’s an inevitable part of living; it’s part of the deal.

What we can control is how we react, how we respond.

That depends on how we choose to perceive things,
and on whether or not we understand that we have a choice
and that this choice matters.

In fact, not only does it matter -

it is the one thing that makes all the difference.

And yet, making a different choice just once, while super beneficial,
rarely solves the problem for good.

Habitual patterns are pretty hard to change, exactly because they are habitual patterns...

So while you're working on it, remember this poem.

I love remembering this poem in challenging times,
especially when I don’t seem to respond so well.

I find it so beneficial that often I share it with my clients,

my students, my family, and my friends.

I hope you find it inspiring and useful,
and that it will come back to your awareness in those challenging times -
as many times all we need is just a good reminder.

So remember this 'autobiography' when life gets you again...

Autobiography In Five Chapters

By Portia Nelson
From: The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying

1) I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall inside.
I am lost... I am hopeless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

2) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I’m in the same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

3) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall inside... it’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault. *
I get out immediately.

4) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

5) I walk down another street.

* - I would humbly suggest replacing “it is my fault” with ‘I could have chosen differently.’  (Eldad)

Remember -

  • Implement.
  • Baby steps.
  • Joyfully.

Done is better than perfect.

To your better life,
with tons of đź’–
